The Story

Think you know kitchen islands?
Think again.

Reclaimed oak grain meeting a stone worktop, up close

The Food Bench began in an artisan bakery on the south coast: a lightbulb moment for designer Ian Cross, three decades deep in interior architecture and the kitchens of west London.

What if the warmth of a freestanding, story-filled piece could meet the discipline of handleless German joinery? What if a kitchen could be transformed by one object, without the disruption, lead time and cost of a full refit?

The answer is built from reclaimed white oak out of Kentucky ranch and railway fencing, kiln-dried, milled, hand-limed and sealed in our Twickenham workshop. Delivered by a two-man team, assembled in about two hours, topped in the stone of your choosing.

No two planks match. That is the point.
